Getting started with SharedTree can be difficult at first. However with a little help, you should be off and running in no time. There are several ways you can start your family tree.

Register

Before making any changes on SharedTree you must Register first. This is a crucial part of SharedTree Founding Principles. Your SharedTree account is completely FREE and we will never share your email address with other people. See the Privacy policy for more information.

By Invitation

If possible you always want to be invited to SharedTree. This is by far the easiest way to get started because one of your relatives has already done much of the work. Simply check your email for their invitation and click on the invite. The invitation has a secret code that will securely attach your new account to your genealogical record.

If you're not sure if any relatives are on SharedTree, then go ahead and register without the invitation. You can link to each other later.

If you're a member already, be sure to make it easy on your relatives by inviting them [1].

Import Data

SharedTree is compatible with GEDCOM file format. Simply export a GEDCOM file from your current genealogy application and upload it to SharedTree. Read Importing Data for more information.

Create a new family tree

This is a simple way to start your tree if you don't have a GEDCOM or an invitation or if you just want to experiment with SharedTree a bit before uploading your data.
